RAM Gallery presents Only in Passing, a group exhibition featuring eleven artists working in and around abstraction. The exhibition takes its title from the familiar, almost dismissive refrain heard when asked about Bakersfield: “Only in passing.” The phrase evokes a place encountered but never explored—seen from the window of a car, a fleeting impression on the way to somewhere else.

Through painting, the artists in Only in Passing engage with abstraction as a space of both immediacy and distance, where gestures, forms, and colors become markers of encounters that are partial, fragmentary, and unresolved. Together, the works trace the tension between transience and attention, the glance and the gaze, the overlooked and the overdetermined.

Only in Passing invites viewers to pause, to linger, and to reconsider what lies along the routes we think we already know.
